Cosmic Dance

Nothing in the universe stands still. Stars are born from the remnants of others, oceans reshape continents, and the smallest particles of existence remain in perpetual motion. Across the immensity of the cosmos, creation and dissolution unfold in an endless exchange of energy and matter. What appears to be an ending becomes the beginning of something else.

Japanese philosopher Okakura Kakuzō describes “the spirit of Cosmic Change, the eternal growth which returns upon itself to produce new forms.” American naturalist John Burroughs similarly observed that “perpetual flux and transition mark even the stars in their courses,” while Ralph Waldo Emerson declared, “Every end is a beginning.”

Their words, alongside passages from William Wordsworth and physicist Fritjof Capra, are woven almost imperceptibly into the painting. Layers of pigment are built up, stripped away and reconfigured; contrasting textures, shifting finishes and subtle glimmers of silver evoke the ceaseless movement of matter and energy. Each addition and erasure becomes part of a surface in continual transformation, reflecting the forces that shape the universe itself.

Capra’s vision of “the dancing universe, the ceaseless flow of energy” resonates throughout the composition, where forms emerge, dissolve and give way to others.

There is something deeply reassuring in recognising that even the stars are not exempt from change. Across the vastness of existence, nothing remains fixed, yet everything participates in an endless process of renewal.

The universe is not a finished creation, but an eternal becoming. Its beauty lies not in permanence, but in the infinite possibilities born of change.
